kathiruppor pattiyal movie review

Several Tamil films have dealt with the lives and struggles of cops who handle law and order, and traffic. Kathiruppor Pattiyal throws light on the cops who work in the RPF (Railway Protection Force). One such RPF officer, Williams (Aruldoss), is miffed with the fact that the public does not respect them when compared to cops who deal with law and order, or traffic. He decides to bring in strict rules and asks his subordinates not to show any mercy towards defaulters who mess with railway rules. With the help of his team, Williams nabs many passengers who violate rules in different ways, which include peeing on railway track, travelling without ticket, and so on.

Sathya (Sachin Mani), who is on his way to Puducherry, to marry his girlfriend, Meghala (Nandita Swetha), too, is one among them, who has been taken into custody at Tambaram railway station. He befriends the other defaulters at the RPF station and narrates his love story to them. Quite impressed by the story, they hatch a plan to help him escape from police custody. Will their plan work out as planned? What will happen to Meghala, who is waiting for Sathya in Puducherry?

The film has a simple and interesting premise set against an intriguing backdrop. A few characters — Baskar (Senrayan, as a wannabe filmmaker), Kunjithapatham (Manobala, as a sex doctor) and Kodeeswaran (Mayilsamy, as a businessman) engage the viewers with their not-so-bad performances. But the one who manages to entertain the most among the ‘defaulters team’ is Kutti Puli (Arunraja Kamaraj, as the head of Sasikumar fans club). His one-liners and references to a few films of Sasikumar, and the admiration for his matinee idol are quite enjoyable.

Sachin puts up a neat performance as a jobless guy, who doesn’t give up his love for his girlfriend, while Nandita is apt in her role. But the romantic track should have been more convincing and developed. A little more attention to the screenplay and character development could have made the movie a better watch. The attempt, however, is decent if you are OK with tolerating a few logical loopholes.
